“Fake news” does not infiltrate the payment network of Visa, but scammers use fake news and deceptive tactics to defraud Visa users and other consumers. To counter these threats, Visa has launched dedicated anti-scam units and uses AI to detect and shut down fraudulent activity.
Fake news and scams related to Visa include:
Telephone scams: Scammers impersonate Visa’s Security and Fraud Department, claiming to be calling about suspicious transactions. They often have some personal information to appear credible and will then ask for the three-digit security code on the back of a credit card to “verify” the user has the card.
Government impersonation scams: Fraudsters pose as government employees (e.g., from the FBI or Social Security Administration) to trick people into revealing their credit card information or account details. Visa has predicted an increase in large ATM withdrawals associated with this type of scam.
Digital pickpocketing: Criminals use mobile point-of-sale devices to tap against an unsuspecting victim’s wallet in a crowded area, initiating a payment without the victim noticin.
Prepaid gift card draining: Scammers tamper with prepaid gift card packaging in retail stores, record the account information, and use the funds before the legitimate purchaser has a chance to.
